After honing his skills on Philly playgrounds and Winston Salem State College, he captured the 1968 NBA rookie-of-the-year award. Monroe meshed his one-on-one moves with the Knicks team concept to win the 1973 NBA title. THE KNICKS. A Charter member of the NBA, the knickerbockers played their first game on November 1, 1946, beating the Toronto Huskies 68-66. By the 1950-51 season, the Knicks had reached the NBA Finals. They would get to the Finals again in 1952 and 1953 but would not win the championship until the 1969-70 season.
